About the Artist
Archie Martel was born on May 9, 1948 in Winnipeg into a large family with 14 brothers and sisters. He spent most of his childhood and early adult life supporting that family. His love for art showed at an early age through his drawings, which then progressed into scenic oil works.
His passion for his heritage of Native Culture drew him into his current works. His inspiration and vision is drawn from the people he loves, including his grandchildren and Mother Earth along with all of her children. His art often depicts the mother nurturing her young, as his mother Alice, despite poverty and hardship, raised and cared for all her children until her death just before Christmas in 2006.
Archie signs his work "Daish", as this is the name by which he is affectionately known.
